Bradninch is a town in Devon near the M5 motorway about three miles south of Cullompton. Most of the nearby farmland belongs to the Prince of Wales. The town has a population of 2300 people.
The town is mentioned in the Domesday book of 1086 where it was called Bradenese, which is thought to have meant broad oak. There is evidence of a Norman fort upon the nearby Saxon hill, and it is thought by historians that the town was surrounded by castles.
In Norman times the town was a feudal barony given by William the Conqueror to William Capra. The town was destroyed by a fire in 1666. Important buildings in the town include Bradninche Guildhall, and the parish church. The 15th Century church is dedicated to St Diesen, although in previous centuries it was dedicated to St Dennis. The chuch has some important historic panels of saints from biblical times.
Bradninch is famous for being the last town in England in 1886 to punish criminals in the stocks.
