The population of Ilminster is about 6000. During the English Civil war in 1645, Ilminster was the scene of some skirmishes between parliamentary troops and Royalist forces.
The town has some 16th Century buildings such as the Ilminster Meeting House, which is used as the towns art gallery. Ilminster takes its name from the River Isle and the Church of Saint Mary. The church is historically significant and has a two story tower and buttresses. There is a bell, which was made in 1732.
The town has good shopping facilities and many local villages use it as its main town for shopping.
