Tiverton is the largest town in mid Devon with a population of circa 39,000.  Tiverton stands at the confluence of the rivers Exe and Lowman.  The Grand Western Canal from Taunton to Tiverton opened in 1838.  Tiverton historically owes its growth and prosperity to the wool trade.  Tiverton Castle was built in 1106 by order of Henry I.  It was besieged during the English Civil War by General Sir Thomas Fairfax, but this was the only time in its history that the Castle saw battle.
