Uffculme was an important part of the Devon wool industry during the 18th Century. It is of especial interest to historians, because Wills have survived since the beginning of the 18th Century giving a unique insight into the changes of land ownership in the town.
The height of the woollen industry was reached in the middle of the 18th Century with exports going as far as Holland. The last woollen mill to operate was built in 1799 by Thomas Fox. This mill has now survived, and been preserved as a working museum.
In November 1998, there was a large explosion at a nearby fireworks factory with many windows being broken in the village. Unfortunately, considerable damage was caused to the roof of St Marys Church, although this was subsequently repaired.
There was a light railway opened in the village in 1876, which had two stations, Coldharbour and Uffculme, but these were closed in 1975.
